Melbournes Best Walking Trails

Break a sweat with Melbourne’s best walking trails. As the sun begins to peep through the clouds, there is nothing more satisfying then venturing outdoors, soaking up some vitamin D and getting your fresh oxygen fix. We are so lucky to be surrounded by some of the most spectacular walking tracks, all within an hour’s drive of Caroline and Sandy Hill Serviced Apartments.

1000 Steps

This beautiful walk provides scenery and a workout! Surrounded by lush ferns, manna gums and blackwood trees, the fresh forest air will make you forget you are only 50 minutes from Melbourne.
Originally made from the trunks of surrounding ferns, the steps are now a mix of wooden pails and concrete steps which were created in 1950. The nature will well and truly embrace you as your heart rate rises. Don’t be fooled by the easy start, your legs will begin to burn before you reach the top. Although tricky, you will be greatly rewarded with the stunning view of Melbourne! Either continue hiking through the various tracks branching off from the top of the steps or take the more popular option of the Lyrebird track – a dirt track that runs beside the 1000 steps.
After 10am the walk is filled with fitness fanatics, leisurely walkers and tourists alike, so be sure to get up early. A drink bottle and a pair of comfortable supportive shoes is a must - your feet will thank you on the way down! Head to Sassafras afterwards for some delicious scones and a caffeine fix.

Albert Park Lake

Located only 3kms from the heart of Melbourne City, Albert Park Lake is a popular spot for an afternoon of sunshine and activities. With picturesque water, palm trees and the city skyline, your walk is bound to be over before you realise!
The round trip is close to 5kms and should take you at least 45 minutes. There are plenty of picnic spots to relax and recharge, equipped with electric BBQ’s, you can make a day out of the many activities Albert Park has to offer. If you are after a quick bite to eat, Greenfields Albert Park (http://www.greenfieldsalbertpark.com.au/) (open Wednesday to Sunday) has many guilt free, healthy meal options and delicious coffee. Located between Albert Park Lake and Albert Park Golf Course, you can enjoy a stunning view of the lake and the World Famous grand prix track.
There is plenty of parking around the lake. Although you do have to buy a ticket you will be happy to know all profit raised from parking is put back into Albert Park ensuring this beautiful inner-city space is properly maintained for your leisure.

Bayside Coastal Trail

If you are without a car and limited to travel, not to worry! One of Melbourne’s most beautiful trails is moments from Caroline and Sandy Hill Serviced Apartments. The Bayside coastal trail stretches from Beaumaris to Brighton, passing through Sandringham, Hampton and Black Rock. The trail varies from bluestone walkways along the beach at Brighton, to the clifftop track between Sandringham and Black Rock – all aspects providing the best opportunity for magnificent photos so be sure to bring your camera.
Perfect for a morning run or sunset stroll, the trail provides several refreshment options. Our favourites being The Baths Café in Brighton, The Sandy Kiosk in Sandringham (this dog friendly shack is perfect for those who are missing their four-legged family member) or the Cerberus Beach House at the magnificent Half Moon Bay in Black Rock.

Two Bays Walking Trail

Located about an hour’s drive along the Mornington Peninsula, this 28km walk will take you from Port Phillip Bay across the Peninsula to Bushrangers Bay. The trail terrain varies from steep gravel sections near Arthurs Seat to an undulating grassy track throughout Greens Bush. Not only will you enjoy beautiful landscapes, keep an eye out for fury friends who may join you for parts of the walk. Popular wildlife includes the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Black Wallaby, Koala, Rosellas and beautiful Fairy Wrens.
The Two Bays Walking Trail is known as the longest continual walking track on the Mornington Peninsula. Walking enthusiasts will easily complete the walk within a day. For those who prefer a scenic stroll it can be split up into multiple smaller sections, perfect to couple with a visit to one of the many wineries located on the Mornington Peninsula.
